Energy Assistance

Energy Assistance turns up the heat

When winter descends, Community Action's Energy Assistance Program heats up.  Each year, this program provides over $400,000 in assistance to more than 1,000 households who would otherwise be unable to pay for heat and energy.  Funding comes through the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for heat, and from Puget Sound Energy for electric, as well as a smaller fund for Cascade Natural Gas customers.  As one energy client told us, "Thank you for helping me this winter.  I am disabled and without your program would not have had money for heat."

SCCAA's Energy Program has five separate funds that provide low-income households with energy assistance

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

LIHEAP benefits, based on household size and income, can assist in the purchase of electricity, gas, wood, propane, or oil.  Participants also receive training in energy conservation.  Each year, more than 1,000 households in Skagit County are able to stay warm and ease the financial burden of winter heating costs because of LIHEAP assistance.

Puget Sound Energy Program

This program assists low-income Puget Sound Energy customers with their electric bills.  The program can assist families with incomes up to 150% of federal poverty guidelines, enabling SCCAA to assist more "working poor" families.  Each year, this fund helps 800-1,000 households.

Salvation Army Warm Home Fund

Funds provided by Puget Sound Energy (PSE) allow us to assist low-income PSE households with disconnect notices and deposits

Cascade Natural Gas Winter Help Fund

Funds provided by Cascade Natural Gas (CNG) allow us to assist low-income CNG households with disconnect notices and deposits.  Each year, this fund helps about 60 households.

Cascade Natural Gas Washington Energy Assistance Fund (WEAF)

Funds provided by Cascade Natural Gas allow us to assist low-income households with natural gas expenses.  This is a new program available to help CNG customers with their energy costs. With income guidelines up to 150% of the federal poverty level, customers not qualifying for LIHEAP may still qualify for this program.
