Community Action Services:

 

Community Voice Mail

For those that can’t afford reliable phone service, Community Voice Mail provides a free, private voice mail number to help people get connected with jobs, housing, and stay in contact with friends and family.

 

Crisis Intervention

Our Critical Needs program helps low-income individuals with emergency help in the form of food and clothing vouchers.

 

Dental Van

The Skagit County Mobile Dental Van plays a big part in helping people who cannot afford dental care.  The Dental Van regularly visits Skagit communities to provide dental care to low-income individuals.

 

East County Services

SCCAA's East County satellite office in Concrete provides basic services including critical needs assistance, legal assistance, and energy assistance.

 

Energy Assistance

Winter home heating and electricity costs can hit hard, and Community Action offers three programs to help.

 

Food

Our Mobile Food Express collaborates with county food banks to provide food packages to the homebound and disabled.  Assistance with food stamp applications is also provided to low-income individuals. We also oversee a Food Bank Distribution Center which works to increase the quality and quantity of food for Food Banks and Meal Programs in Skagit County. Homeless Childcare Program

The Homeless Childcare Program provides an opportunity for homeless families to search for employment, find housing, and to access other social services and medical appointments that will aid them in establishing a residence of their own

 

Housing

SCCAA's housing program provides homeless families with shelter and housing, and helps them become self-sufficient  Learn more about the Family Development Center and the Transitional Housing programs.

 

Legal

SCCAA's Volunteer Lawyer Program offers free legal assistance including family law, bankruptcy, and domestic violence issues, to eligible low-income Skagit County residents. 

 

Literacy

Free tutoring is available to adults and their family members who need assistance in basic reading, writing, math, GED preparation, family literacy, and English as a second language.  Workplace literacy services are also available.

 

Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program

The Washington State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, as mandated by the Federal Older Americans Act, is intended to improve the quality of life for people who live in licensed long-term care facilities.

Residents in long-term care facilities are guaranteed certain rights by federal and state laws and regulations. The purpose of the program is to protect and promote these rights in long-term care facilities and assist in empowering residents to become self-advocates.

 

Maternity Support Services

Nursing, counseling, and nutrition services are provided to pregnant women and infants.

 

Medical Assistance

Prescriptions, eyeglasses and other medical supplies are available to low-income families.  Referrals to volunteer optometrists for eye exams and to other resources for breast mammograms are also offered.

 

Mental Health Ombuds Services

Serving the North Sound Region, falls under the Health Services Division of the Skagit County Community Action Agency.  It provides consumer-directed advocacy for anyone applying for or receiving medically necessary, publicly funded, mental health services in Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, Island and San Juan Counties. Trained and experienced mental health Ombuds help guide the client through the community mental health program’s complaint, grievance, appeal and fair hearing process.

 

Veterans Assistance

Assistance for emergency needs, referrals, and advocacy is provided to low-income veterans, their dependents, widows, widowers, and orphans.

 

VISTA

The AmeriCorps*VISTA program develops projects that directly impact poverty in Skagit County.  Volunteers are placed in non-profit agencies for one year to further develop and establish these programs in the community.

 

Volunteer Center

SCCAA's  Volunteer Center promotes volunteerism to meet the needs of Skagit County's low-income.

 

Volunteer Chore Services

Volunteers provide direct services to frail, elderly, and disabled adults, such as minor home repair, housekeeping, shopping, and yard work.

 

Washington Reading Corps (WRC)

The Washington Reading Corps (WRC) AmeriCorps team-based program is proud to be a part of the Skagit County Community Action Agency. The mission of the Washington Reading Corps is to improve reading abilities of K-6 students across Washington State. This is achieved through research-based tutoring of struggling readers and effective collaborations among schools, families, community members, National Service, businesses and state partners

 

Women, Infants & Children (WIC)

The Women, Infants & Children Food and Nutrition Program provides free food and nutrition education to help give children a healthy start in life.  Specialized Breastfeeding Support services include access to electric breast pumps and other aids to assist working mothers and those who experience premature birth, illness, or other breastfeeding challenges.
