Statement of Purpose
Skagit
Literacy provides quality, goal-based educational services for the
people of Skagit County so that they can achieve economic & social
independence. |

Our Students

What Does Skagit Literacy Do?
Skagit Literacy, a program of Skagit County Community Action Agency, offers free
tutoring for adults in one-to-one, small group, and classroom settings. We
are not a school. We work with learners to develop their individual goals,
education plan and curriculum, and we adapt instruction to the student's
preferred learning style. The only requirements for enrollment in the program
are demonstrated educational need, motivation and ability to attend classes
regularly. We offer a variety of services throughout Skagit County, from
Anacortes to Concrete.
Volunteer Literacy
Skagit Literacy recruits, trains and supports community volunteers to work
one-to-one and in small groups tutoring English as a Second Language and Basic
Skills. Annually, more than 100 volunteers work with more than 500 adult
learners in Skagit County to realize their dreams of improved job opportunities,
self-sufficient family management, and active citizenship. Volunteer Literacy is funded by the US
Department of Education and through a Washington State Office of Adult Literacy
Volunteer Literacy Grant.

English as a Second Language
(ESL)
Skagit Literacy meets the dramatic need for English language instruction in
Skagit County through small group and classroom instruction. We base
instruction, including conversation, reading and writing, upon student goals and
work with students to develop an individual education plan.
|
 |
Basic Skills (Adult
Basic Education - ABE)
ABE students are served primarily through one-to-one instruction using specially
trained volunteer tutors. This confidential, personalized and
goal-oriented approach to reading, writing and math has proven successful in
meeting the special needs of adult learners.

Family Literacy
This
unique program provides literacy
instruction for the whole family with the aim of breaking the cycle of
illiteracy. Families engage in activities that promote reading together. In addition to basic skills and ESL, parents study parenting, child development,
and the important role of parent as teacher. Children work to improve
their English skills and with the guidance of their teachers, we work to create
an individual learning plan that enables children to become more successful in
school. This program is offered at three local sites:

Mount Vernon School District funds Family
Literacy at Little Mountain Elementary.
|
 |
Even Start and Verizon Reads fund programming
at Madison Elementary, which is a collaboration between the Mount Vernon School
District, Skagit Valley College, Northwest ESD 189, and Skagit County Community
Action Agency.
|
 |
At Westview Elementary in Burlington, the
Juntos Podemos Family Literacy program is funded by Skagit County Readiness to
Learn and the Burlington-Edison School District.
|
Teen Literacy
Teen
programming focuses on providing educational opportunities for 16-24 year olds
who have dropped out of high school. In addition to increasing basic skills, the
program provides preparation for the GED exam, career planning and training in
collaboration with WorkSource Skagit, and a strong working relationship with
Skagit County Youth and Family Services. This AmeriCorps*VISTA program offers
services in Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley. Services will soon be offered in
Hamilton and county-wide through an Internet-based distance education program.
|
Workplace Literacy This innovative
fee-for-service program was created to meet the diverse needs of Skagit
County companies and their employees. To this end, Workplace Literacy
partners directly with local businesses, providing classes customized
for the company and also for the students. The program offers classes in
Spanish as a Second Language, English as a Second Language, or a
combination English/Spanish class wherein students learn from both their
instructor and from one another. The goals of this program include
increased worker satisfaction and retention, increased productivity, and
improving participating businesses' ability to adapt to change. Past
local partners include: Skagit Gardens Wholesale of Mount Vernon, Tomco
Marine Group of La Conner, SeaBear Smokehouse of Anacortes, Janicki
Industries of Sedro-Woolley, and Washington Alder of Mount Vernon. |
Financial Literacy
The Financial Literacy
program is an AmeriCorps*VISTA project designed to help low-income families
set and reach their financial goals. Through a combination of financial
training, consumer awareness and individual financial counseling,
participants are introduced to basic banking concepts, credit repair and
long-term achievement of goals such as purchasing a home, opening a business
or financing an education.
Skagit County Community Action Agency, in cooperation with
North Coast Credit Union (NCCU),
is pleased to offer two great free financial workshops in February.
