"4% Friday" at Skagit Valley Food Co-op

This Friday, June 27th, is "4% Friday" at the Skagit Valley Food Co-op.

This means 4% of proceeds for the day will benefit the Skagit County Community Action Agency's Food program, particularly, the Skagit Food Share Alliance, working to provide fresh, locally grown foods to local food banks.

So, you can meet all your food shopping needs and support our program to help those in need at the same time, for no extra cost!  If you’ve never been to the Co-op, this is a great time to check it out. In addition to healthy groceries, they also have a deli, salad bar, plant starts, garden supplies, pet supplies, children’s toys and games, health and beauty products, and gifts.

The Food Co-op is located in downtown Mount Vernon, at 202 South First Street and is open from 8am until 9pm on Friday.

1st Annual "Dine Out for the Homeless & the Hungry" was a Success!

Skagit County’s First Annual  “Dine Out for Homelessness and Hunger” on December 4 was a great success! Thus far, participating restaurants and individuals have contributed $1,537.42 through the event, with more donations coming in each week.

Donations will help Community Action shelter homeless families and increase the quantity and nutritional quality of food available to local families that rely on area food banks.

Community Action sends a warm and special thanks to our participating restaurants, who contributed 20% of their lunch and dinner proceeds on December 4:

bullet Cajun Bar & Grill, Concrete.
bullet The Brown Lantern, Anacortes
bullet Common Ground Coffee House, Burlington.
bullet Java Jo Espresso & Café, Mount Vernon
bullet Lunch Box, Mount Vernon
bullet Pacioni’s Pizzeria, Mount Vernon
bullet Mexico Café, Mount Vernon
bullet Dulce Plate, La Conner
bullet Nell Thorn Restaurant & Pub, La Conner
bullet Palmer’s on the Waterfront, La Conner.

If eating out on December 4 was not an option for you, we would invite you to “dine in” instead – and send in the money you saved by eating at home. Either way, your tax-deductible donation will go to help feed and care for the homeless and hungry of Skagit County.

Thank you to Annual Public Employees Charity Golf Tournament Sponsors

Community Action would like to thank the sponsors of this year’s Public Employees Charity Golf Tournament. The annual tournament, sponsored by the North Coast Credit Union, hosted 60 golfers this year, the highest turnout ever for the tournament.  Special thanks to Jim Martin at Skagit County, and Terry Belcoe at North Coast Credit Union. Tournament sponsors this year also include Costco, Anchor Environmental, Golf Savings Bank, HDR, Pat Rimmer Tire, Motor Trucks, and NorthWest Hydraulic.

The $1,700 raised will benefit the Skagit Food Bank Distribution Center, managed by Community Action, which serves food banks and meal programs throughout Skagit County. The funds will specifically support the new Skagit Food Share Alliance project, whose twin goals are to support local agriculture and end local hunger.  The Alliance, a partnership with Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland and North Coast Credit Union, works with local farmers to increase their markets by purchasing locally grown produce specifically for local food banks and hot meal programs. Thank you to all who contributed your time and effort to this year’s Public Employees Golf Tournament to make this event such a great success!

2005 Skagit County Low-Income Needs Assessment

Skagit County Community Action Agency’s “Low-Income Needs Assessment” is the foundation of planning efforts for Community Action and other service providers. The document cites data collected from over 1,000 households throughout the county. The report may be duplicated as desired. The Executive Summary, as a stand-alone document, provides a bird’s eye view of this and previous needs assessments. A portion of the study features a targeted study of the Hamilton area in eastern Skagit County.
