Skagit County Community Action
Agency is excited to announce the start of the Skagit Food Share Alliance (SFSA)
project, whose twin goals are to support local agriculture and end local
hunger. The Alliance, a partnership with Community Action,
Skagit Valley Food Co-op
and North Coast Credit
Union, works with local farmers to increase their markets by
purchasing locally grown produce specifically for local food banks and hot
meal programs.
The Skagit Food Share Alliance works to provide local farmers
with up front capital to produce fruits, vegetables and other nutritious
foods. Farmers receive a boost to their markets, while food banks receive
fresh, locally grown, nutritious food for the hungry people they serve. SFSA
Supporters and sponsors make this program possible by helping “fill the gap”
in funding.
Farms in Skagit County:
Many small farmers are forced out of business due to loss of land and high
costs of business. When we lose farmers, we lose a way of life. We also
lose out on social, economic and environmental wealth. This project is a way
to help provide farmers with new, reliable, local markets.
Hunger and Malnutrition: These are alarmingly common
problems in our community. One-fourth of our low-income citizens don’t get
enough to eat, and 20% of all Skagit households rely on area food banks.
This project will allow food banks to provide more nutritious, locally grown
food to those who need it.
This program is made possible
by donations from sponsors. If you would like to become a sponsor, please
