Community Action Receives $5,000 Donations from Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association and Windermere Foundation for Emergency Family Shelter Help

Skagit County Community Action Agency would like to express its gratitude to the Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association (SICBA) and Windermere Foundation for the donations they made in the amount of $5,000. These donations will help the agency in its goal of acquiring additional space for the Emergency Family Shelter, which currently serves over 350 homeless parents and children annually. Depending on how much money is raised for renovation, the new space would allow Community Action to serve 200 - 400 more parents and children a year. The additional shelter capacity would also provide a community space for skills building workshops that help the families become self-sufficient.

SICBA was founded in 1979 and currently has 537 member companies in its organization. For the last 20 years, the association's Annual Golf Tournament has raised money for charities such as, Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, 4-H, Skagit Humane Society, Teen Oasis and a number of other non-profit organizations. The tournament is held in Skagit County one year and in Island County the next year.  Where the tournament is held determines where the charity will be chosen.  This year it was held in Skagit County and Community Action was the recipient of the funds raised at the event. For more information about SICBA call (360) 757-6916 or visit www.sicba.org.

The Windermere Foundation, created in 1989, is the 2004 recipient of the Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation by the Washington Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. A portion of every house sold by a Windermere sales associate goes to the foundation, and with contributions from other Windermere employees, and the public, the foundation is able to distribute more than a million dollars annually to non-profit agencies dedicated to helping homeless and low-income families. More information about Windermere can be found at www.windermere.com.

Community Action is the heart of the solution to poverty in Skagit County. Each year, Community Action's many services, including our Emergency Family Shelter, touch the lives of over 23,000 low-income Skagitonians, helping about a fifth of our county's population get past emergencies and on their feet again. If you are interested in learning more, volunteering or supporting Community Action's shelter expansion, please contact the agency at 416-7585.
